Sometimes, you meet a young athlete who reminds you why sports matter. This afternoon, we met 12-year-old Yafet.
Unlike many kids his age, Yafet told us that he plays table tennis because he sees it as a real sport. That simple statement stayed with us. At 12 years old, without professional training, and without even having a racket of his own, he already understands what it means to love a sport.
Yafet has been playing table tennis for a couple of years. For most of that time, he has been playing with a broken, cheap racket that he borrows from the One Yonge Community Centre in Toronto. He did not complain. He just kept playing.
It seems his family may not have been able to afford a racket for him, or perhaps they may simply be busy caring for his younger siblings. While many kids have parents who take them to the community centre and play with them, Yafet often finds himself figuring things out on his own.
And yet, he keeps showing up.
Over the past year, with the help of Bill Yang, a senior player from Taiwan, Yafet has improved tremendously. He can now loop backspin and topspin balls smoothly, and he has developed real power. He even goes to the gym to get stronger.
What impresses us most is not just his ability. It is his passion.
When I was at his age, I also played with a terrible racket. I had no idea what professional equipment or structured training looked like. I simply loved playing. That is why I understand how special Yafet's passion is.
Talent can be developed. Technique can be taught. Equipment can be upgraded. But passion is much harder to find. You cannot buy it. You cannot teach a child to genuinely love a sport. Yafet already has it.
A new racket will not make him a champion overnight. But maybe it will make him believe that someone believes in him. And sometimes, that is where a dream begins.
We want to give him a chance
We believe Yafet deserves the opportunity to compete at the next Ontario Championship. We believe he has a real chance to achieve something in the U13 category if he gets the right training, competition experience, and support.
That is why Pong Home is looking to raise funds to help send Yafet to the tournament and support his training. We are also looking for brands, coaches, clubs, and members of the table tennis community who may be willing to help with equipment, accessories, training, tournament expenses, or anything else that could help him develop.
You do not have to give a lot. Every bit of support can make a difference.
Because the goal is not simply to help Yafet win a tournament. The goal is to give a 12-year-old kid who loves table tennis a fair chance to see how far he can go.
Maybe he becomes an Ontario champion, maybe he becomes a national champion, maybe one day he represents Ethiopia or Canada on the Olympic stage.
We do not know. But we do know this: you cannot discover how far a kid can go if nobody gives him the chance to try.
Yafet has already done the hardest part. He kept playing. Now, let's see how far he can go. 🏓❤️
